Hunterdon Food Calendar: June 29, 2015

We’re changing things up a bit here at Hunterdon County Taste. Our weekday calendar post will come out on Mondays now, and on Thursday look for our “Things you gotta do in Hunterdon this weekend” post. So now you don’t have to wait until the weekend to have fun. There’s plenty to do during the week, too! Check out what’s on this week’s menu, below.

Tuesday, June 30: Up next in the Guest Pizzaiolo Series at Liberty Hall Pizza is Colonial Era-inspired pizza. That’s right. Executive Chef Mark Valenza of the historic Washington Crossing Inn in Bucks County will be sharing his creations: a “Summer Garden Pizza” topped with Jersey Sweet Corn, Pico de Gallo, Fontina Cheese and Marinara Sauce; and a “White Pine Nut Pizza” made with Pine Nut Pesto, Prosciutto, Buffalo Mozzarella & Crème Fraiche.

Wednesday, July 1: If, like me, you’ve always wondered what to do with fennel, head over to the Farm Cooking School. Chefs Ian and Shelley have lots of suggestions, from Orange-Braised Fennel Crostini to Fennel Stalk Mostarda with Grilled Sausages and Fennel Sorbet. After this cooking class, you’ll be sorry when fennel stops showing up in your CSA box.

Thursday, July 2: Yep, things just got real. School is out and the kids are home. And after a long day of activity in the sun and at the pool, they’re hungry. But who really feels like cooking? Thankfully, you can take advantage of Italian Night at Lovin’ Oven, where kids 12 and under can eat free bottomless bowls of pasta. Adults get three courses for $21. I know. Good tip, right?

Stay tuned for the top things to do this weekend, coming on Thursday!

Here’s what you’ll find at area farmers’ markets:

Blueberries

Arugula, basil, beets, blueberries (new!), bok choy, broccoli, broccoli rabe, carrots, chives, cilantro, dill, escarole, fennel,  garlic, garlic scapes, green beans, green onions, cut herbs, kale, kohlrabi, leeks, lettuce, mint, mizuna, mushrooms, mustard greens, napa cabbage, new potatoes, oregano, parsley, potatoes, radicchio, radishes, rosemary, sage, scallions, snap peas, spinach, spring onions, spring turnips, Swiss chard, summer squash, tatsoi, tender greens, thyme, tomatoes, zucchini and more.

Most markets will also have eggs from free-range chickens, grass-fed and pastured meats, preserves, specialty foods, baked goods like breads, cakes, cookies and pastries, cheese and yogurt, cider and juice, sauces locally roasted coffee, and interesting crafts from local artisans.
